OCLPA is a non-profit organization made up of legal secretaries, paralegals, attorneys, law students, and other legal professionals who live and work in or near Orange County, California. The association is dedicated to a variety of purposes, which includes lifelong learning, networking opportunities, and a spirit of friendship and common interest among its members. OCLPA offers its members important opportunities for education and development, as well as regular, affordable and convenient educational programs featuring distinguished speakers on issues of law and interest to legal professionals. Through this site, we hope to educate you on the multitude of benefits exclusive to our members. Introduction to Orange County Legal Professionals Association, Inc.
ORANGE COUNTY LEGAL PROFESSIONALS ASSOCIATION, (OCLPA) (formerly Orange County Legal Secretaries Association, Inc.) was chartered with 10 members on May 7, 1949 and continues to grow each month. It is a non-profit corporation, and members of OCLPA automatically become members of Legal Professionals, Inc. (LPI), a statewide organization of legal professionals. Membership is available to anyone with a minimum of six months experience in a law office, or engaged in work of a legal nature. Student membership is available for those currently studying towards a career in the legal field.
OCLPA holds monthly educational meetings on the first Thursday of each month at a centrally located restaurant or hotel, and members, visitors and guests are encouraged to attend. Each dinner meeting includes a period of socializing, a short business meeting, installation of new members, and a 30-45 minute presentation by a distinguished speaker on a relevant topic of the law. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person meetings are current suspending. Monthly meetings are offered via Zoom during this time.
Some of the OCLPA membership benefits include major medical insurance, cancer and intensive care insurance, disability income insurance, dental insurance, retirement income plans, Orange County Federal Credit Union, discounts through CEB, as well as Costco and Hertz memberships. In addition, OCLPA has a monthly newsletter, Orange Blossoms which provides current information on changes in the law, legal procedures, employment assistance, interclub events and educational programs. Members of OCLPA also receive advance notice and a discounted price on LPI publications: The Legal Professionals Handbook, and Law Office Procedures Manual; plus a yearly subscription to The Legal Professional, LPI's quarterly magazine.
OCLSA supports the California Certified Legal Secretary (CCLS) certification program through LPI. A study course is available for those who wish to sit for the one-day exam, which is given semi-annually. The CCLS exam tests California legal procedures, legal terminology, performance skills, reasoning and ethics, law office administration, bookkeeping and communication. A minimum of two years experience is required.
