Introduction to Orange County Legal Secretaries Association, Inc.
ORANGE COUNTY LEGAL SECRETARIES ASSOCIATION, (OCLSA) was chartered with 10 members on May 7, 1949 and continues to grow each month. It is a non-profit corporation, and members of OCLSA automatically become members of Legal Secretaries, Inc. (LSI), a statewide organization of legal professionals. Membership is available to anyone with a minimum of six months experience in a law office, or engaged in work of a legal nature. Student membership is available for those currently studying towards a career in the legal field.
OCLSA holds monthly educational meetings on the first Thursday of each month at a centrally located restaurant or hotel, and members, visitors and guests are encouraged to attend. Each dinner meeting includes a period of socializing, a short business meeting, installation of new members, and a 30-45 minute presentation by a distinguished speaker on a relevant topic of the law.
Some of the OCLSA membership benefits include major medical insurance, cancer and intensive care insurance, disability income insurance, dental insurance, retirement income plans, Orange County Federal Credit Union, discounts through CEB, as well as Costco and Hertz memberships. In addition, OCLSA has a monthly newsletter, Orange Blossoms which provides current information on changes in the law, legal procedures, employment assistance, interclub events and educational programs. Members of OCLSA also receive advance notice and a discounted price on LSI publications: The Legal Professionals Handbook, and Law Office Procedures Manual; plus a yearly subscription to The Legal Secretary, LSI's quarterly magazine.
OCLSA supports the California Certified Legal Secretary (CCLS) certification program through LSI. A study course is available for those who wish to sit for the one-day exam, which is given semi-annually. The CCLS exam tests California legal procedures, legal terminology, performance skills, reasoning and ethics, law office administration, bookkeeping and communication. A minimum of two years experience is required.
